Grey Hull 82/83

The dark-grey hull was repainted in a light pebble grey that was almost white. The boot-topping remained red.
The ship’s name and homeport on the bow and stern were painted black.

However the repainting was done earlier during emergency repairs to QE2’s turbines in Southampton between 10 and 27 June 1983.

Wonder whose decision this was? When you think about it there must have been a consensus of numpties who thought the new hull colour was a good idea No

Perhaps this is where the inspiration came from

Port Line - Port Alfred

Although a pebble gray QE2 was seen as "unique", for a number of years ships of Port Line (aka Commonwealth & Dominion) a Cunard subsidiary since the early 1900's were plying their trade in similar colours.

As I understand it the logic (if you can really call it that) was to make her look "new" folling the major refit that had to be done after the falklands war. I am glad it did not last though.
